With all of the patriotic memorials and celebrations surrounding September 11th, I realized I am a loser mom. Well, perhaps that is a little harsh. But I did realize that we do not own an American flag! Growing up we had a nice little hanger for it on the front porch and my mother was great about putting it out on special holidays, like Flag Day (shocker on that one), the 4th of July, Memorial Day, and a slew of others.
It was nice. I felt very patriotic and the flag was special. It made our house feel important, too. So I guess that now that I am 3? years old and have 3 kids and a husband, I should not wait around for my mother to put the flag out. I am the mother (scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) In my mind I am forever 16 and just expect the adult to take care of all that adult stuff. However the closest thing to 16 in my present day reality is my jean's size so it is time to take the baton.
Tomorrow I will be loading my crew into the truck and heading to the WalMart (that's how we say it in the South) and purchase myself an American flag, fancy holder and all. I know it will in some ways actually be a day late (but not a dollar short), but really showing pride in your country doesn't follow any of those white pants rules. My kids need to see that we are a family that loves this country. Grandma cannot have all the fun.
